Forest unleash in the second half, again!

Nottingham Forest - 4
Southend United - 1

Well the league table is looking a lot rosier now, up to second place with a barnstorming win against promotion rivals Southend United at the City Ground this evening.  We started with the same lineup as saturday, which had me spitting feathers almost immediately, as we’d looked so much more composed with two strikers on the pitch against Tranmere.

At the time I hadn’t realised that it was a ricochet from a Clingan clearance that sliced apart our defence and left Mark Gower with an opportunity to put an absolute pearler of a shot past Paul Smith with just two minutes on the clock.  I’d assumed it was a killer throughball and poor defending, so it’s reassuring to realise it was at least a bit of an unfortunate mixup!

Forest did respond positively, but did look disjointed and uneasy.  Commons and Cohen seemed to alternate as the ’second striker’ in a kind of 4-4-2 formation, but we did seem to revert to a 4-5-1 quite readily leaving Junior Agogo with little or no options upfront, or indeed when he was deep in midfield or on the wing as he seemed to be!

Commons had the first real chance for us - a Cohen cross found him six yards out from goal, but he could only get a feeble left foot onto it giving the ‘keeper little trouble.  McGugan had a freekick deflected for a corner which came to nothing, and from here to around the half hour mark the game did descend into quite a scrappy affair reminiscent of the first half on saturday.

After half an hour Agogo put a decent cross in after good work from Davies, but the keeper was on hand to take the ball away from the danger as Commons was looming, giving Forest a corner - and a spell on increased pressure which was notably starting to rattle the Shrimpers who were starting to make unforced errors.

The equaliser came before half time.  After a corner was cleared the ball reached Clingan on the right who put in a terrific cross to the back stick, where an unmarked Breckin was able to launch himself at the ball and plant an unstoppable header into the back of the net.  This gave the Reds what was probably just about a deserved equaliser.

Forest started the second half with much more purpose (sound familiar?!), three minutes in and after yet another foul on Kris Commons, Clingan delivered a decent freekick into the box from which Chambers planted a powerful header onto the post.  Shortly after this Agogo also came close - Commons released him down the left and his first time shot flashed across the goal and wide.

Southend weren’t without opportunities though, a corner was played into the danger zone and bounced about all over the place - an unconfident looking Smith failed to get a punch on it, and fortunately for us it bounced off a Southend player and out for a goal kick.  Commons was booked after this for a poor challenge.

The long awaited introduction of Nathan Tyson now happened, it was Davies who was withdrawn from the action, with Commons switching sides and Cohen moving left and Tyson taking a place upfront alongside Agogo.  And minutes later he’d given us the lead - Cohen played him through, he looked suspiciously offside to me, but he showed great composure to take the ball on and finish calmly into the Trent End.

Almost immediately after this Clarke of Southend had a tussle with Chambers in the corner near the away fans, Clarke had wrestled Luke to the floor and practically removed his shirt before the were on their feet and squaring up to one another.  Chambers was cunning enough not to do a great deal as Clarke lunged towards him - at which Chambers duly collapsed in a heap as though he’d been poleaxed.

Now my understanding of the rules is that an intent to headbutt or shoulder is a red card, in which case the referee made the right decision (indeed, the guy could’ve been booked for the wrestling, and then again for the lunge if need be), so I think the referee did get the decision right, despite Tilson’s protestations, however I was disappointed to see Chambers to blatantly playact in this manner.

After the card, the Southend side that had looked composed in the first half looked disjointed and easily outnumbered - their policy of putting 2-3 men on Tyson when he had the ball left wide open spaces elsewhere, which gave Forest ample opportunity to enjoy plenty of possession and never really look overly troubled again in the game.

The third goal came when Agogo picked up the ball 30 yards from goal, he shaped to shoot a couple of times, and just as it looked like his chance had gone, from somewhere he unleashed a fantastic curling shot low to the right of the goal.  I would think the ‘keeper would be unhappy with not reaching it, although it was coming through a crowded area - so perhaps I’m being overly harsh.

Commons came close shortly after this, taking too long over a chance infront of goal and allowing a defender to get a block in to concede a corner.  From this corner the ball fell eventually to Brecks of all people, who was only able to direct his shot pretty much straight at the goalkeeper giving him some much needed respite.

Cohen worked well to provide another chance for Commons, but it was deflected and easy for the keeper to parry in the end.  A brief spell of Southend pressure followed, but Forest were to be granted a fourth goal - Tyson had a chance to cross which was blocked, but it came back to him and his second effort found Agogo in the box to head home his second, and Forests’ fourth.

Commons and Agogo were withdrawn at this point for Morgan who again took up a bizarre midfield role, and Emile Sinclair for a run out - after which it was basically a whole load of keepball from Forest as they wound down the clock until full time - after which it transpired that results hadn’t quite all gone our way - but Orient and Carlisle only drawing puts us second, and only a point off the top.

Of course, it’s Carlisle up next for us in the league after the distraction of an FA Cup game against Lincoln City - although Forest are in the process of trying to get this postponed due to international callups - so it may be that we don’t have a shot at the top as soon as we’d perhaps like whilst confidence is running high.

A big well done to the Reds - a great comeback and second half performance against a promotion rival is a cracking achievement.  After the disappointment of a poor 0-0 draw against Oldham this has been a great response to start to put points on the board, I’m certainly feeling very smug now!

    w00t, we kicked arse!

Great performance tonight, well, the second half when we had two strikers at least. Surely now CC must realise we are best with 4-4-2, and not the 4-3-3/4-51 (call it what you like) Well worth my fiver entry fee!

  3. dave Says:

Yeah, this was good to see. All too often we seem to give away points to teams that aren’t up in the chase. This time we won them back from a rival - and they are the points that count.

  4. EgorTheRed Says:

Great result after the initial shock of conceding a bit of a freak goal.

Taking up Alex’s comment about entry for a fiver…..26000 !! Surely somewhere someone must be doing the maths and realise people will come if the price is right. Especially on a cold night in November?

Whilst Im not advocating this week on week, surely someone at Forest must see the benefits of a more competive pricing policy???

Nice to finally see what this team is capable of. More than a bit fortunate at times but you make your own luck in this game. The showboating from Commons and McGugan at 3-1 was fabulous. Anyone know why Davies dissappeared for a few mins just into the second half, right when we conceeded a free-kick on the edge of the box? Did he need the loo? Very odd.

As for ticket prices, they won’t change unless we fail to get promoted. The number of kids for a quid and all seats a fiver games is set in stone when season ticket prices are announced. Prices will remain the same/increase with the same policy if we get promoted - higher division = higher gate.

Great result for the men in Red, though I must have seen a different first half because I felt we dominated it from the moment they scored and took a well deserved equaliser.
What I would like to see now is all of us fans getting behind the team and manager and help keep this momentum going. We may not always agree with CCs tactics or team selection but something is going right as we are sitting 2nd. So, no more singling out of players for abuse (I’m not a fan of Breckin but he is in possession of the shirt and is doing okay), no booing at half time - even if the performance is not great, as we know we can turn it round.
    Come on you Reds !

I’d be interested in your views on last night re no Lennon? The result suggests he was not missed? As I’ve stated on other forums, I’m a big fan of his type of player [essential for a winning side]. Maybe away at Carlisle is more the sort of game where we would miss him?

  8. Paul Says:

We will need Lennon this season. His experience, willingness to take the ball and his will to win will be invaluble as we strive for promotion. These are young lads in our midfield and there will be games when they struggle and are out of depth (Carlisle away may well be one of those games)and this is when Lennon will come into his own.

  9. George A Says:

Lennon’s involvement IS essential as far as Im concerned.

I reinterate my thoughts I expressed when NFFC discussed his role several weeks ago. We need this “McGovern” type of player to sit in front of the back four and break up their approach play. Every good team has one.

I thought Southend were v mediocre to say they were above us in the league at the start of play. To be fair, they are a passing team (rather than a just lump it up field) but we were just far superior in our passing game and I fancied us to get a result once I saw how they wanted to play. Good show of character to go one down and respond how we did though.

And credit Forest on playing 10 men really well. Switching play from flank to flank and making them do the running (and waiting for the gaps to appear) is the best way to play a team in that situation. We appear to be learning!

  10. George A Says:

Oh yes, I forgot to mention credit due also to Bennett who was, in my opinion, a few weeks back, well behind Lockwood in the running for the left back shirt.

Excellent game on Sat against Tranmere (both crosses led to the goals) and another good game last night. His overlapping is improving every game and his crossing ability is also improving. He appears also to attaining some minor “cult” status as being a hard S.O.A. B as well!!

Well done Jules and keep it up!

  11. Radgie Says:

I find that rather an odd opinion George A. Lockwood has only played 75 minutes for us so there’s not a whole lot to base a judgement on. FWIW, I thought he looked excellent in the first 5-10 mins against Bournemouth but absolutely awful for the remainder of his time on the pitch. I was thinking what the heck have we bought this fella for, he’s pants.

Chambers on the other hand started well and has got better and better although he’s had a slight dip of late which may be more to do with the opposition than him personally.

Just to complete my assessment of our new defensive recruits, Wilson has been nothing short of magnificent in every game so far (based on home games only).

Just watched the Tyson goal on Virgin Media’s free highlights website thingey (http://www.football.virginmedia.com/page/NottinghamForest/) and despite the fact that everyone, especially the sour grapes shrimpers’ boss thinks it was offside (even Smouldsy thought it “may” have been offside), it looks onside to me… plus there was dear old Chipperfield getting a bit miffed and even McGovern casting doubt… fair play to the linesman for getting it right for a change and more of the same please Nathan - cracking goal… Yoooooooooou Reds!

  13. Wacko Jacko Says:

Does anyone think a midfield of Commons, Cohen, Clingan and Davies with Tyson and Aggogo upfront is workable? Perhaps its better to run teams down with 3 upfront and then hit the opposition with Tyson when they’re tired later in the game.
Are Cohen and Clingan to similar to play as a 2 in the middle, do we need Lennon in alongside one of them if we play 4-4-2, or can Clingan drop deeper and make it work. Is it better to have all 3 in there?
Only time will tell, but I would be interested to know everyones views.

By the way, I personally think that Calderwood is being pretty canny with how he’s using the front players at the moment and making sure that they are all getting accustomed to playing upfront in differnt formations, especially when considering we will lose Aggogo later in the season. I think its good to keep using Tyson sparingly for now and thereby keeping him ready to fire for when the business end of the season kicks in, or maybe I’m just being too long sighted!

  14. Radgie Says:

From what I’ve seen so far, Commons, Lennon, McGugan and Davies have been our best performing midfield quartet - individually. They’ve never played as a four, of course and it’d be a tough call to leave Cohen out - he SO reminds me of Bohinen; always involved, always in the box but can’t score for toffee, even when presented with the simplest of chances. Lets just hope he breaks his duck in the same style as Lars did.
